THEATER
THAT WON’T
FLINCH.
My Friends,
In times like these, one of the most radical things an artist can do is tell the truth. This season–and for the past 24 years–The Civilians has done just that.
We launched two world premieres: Sex Variants of 1941 and Radio Downtown. These shows brought to life honest, radical, and unapologetically queer stories at a time when identities are being erased in real time.
We presented The Gulf at Princeton’s McCarter Theater, a devastating true story of the 2010 BP oil spill, told in their own words by frontline communities and activists fighting for environmental justice.
We workshopped new plays by AriDy Nox and Kareem Fahmy as part of The Next Forever (our climate storytelling partnership with Princeton’s Lewis Center and High Meadows Environmental Institute), and welcomed newly commissioned playwrights Kate Douglas and Kate Tarker who are already collaborating with climate scientists confronting the crisis with creativity and urgency.
And, next year, we’re thrilled to bring to the stage…
the world premiere of
ANNE WASHBURN’S
The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire
a searching, surreal new play about how communities hold together (or fall apart) in times of loss and change.
These are the stories that risk erasure, and the ones that need our support. We’re not backing down–we can’t do it without you.
Please show your support by making a tax-deductible donation before June 30th.
We make theater from real life—courageous, complex, and deeply human. At a time when truth itself is under attack, The Civilians won’t flinch.
Thanks for reading—and for standing with us.
Gratefully,
Steve Cosson
Artistic Director
